Community Action New Mexico Awarded $100,000 Kellogg GrantCommunity Action New Mexico, an AFI grantee, was recently awarded $100,000 by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation to increase family economic security and community economic development in New Mexico. “We have two major initiatives that this grant will advance as we expand opportunities for developing the assets of children, families and communities in New Mexico,” said Ona Porter, Executive Director for Community Action New Mexico. The first initiative is a permanent trust fund for asset development work, the second is a policy and financial framework for matched savings accounts for children, also known as Child Development Accounts (CDAs). The Kellogg Foundation’s award will be a great boon to an organization that has already been successful in the promotion of asset building among New Mexico residents. “From the 14 year old chicken farmer in Torreon to the Katrina refugees who are now proud homeowners near Santa Fe; from the international Cota tea business in Gallup to the recent UNM graduate from Acoma Pueblo, we have proven that asset formation opportunities change people's lives,” Porter stated proudly.
